Inevitably, Jalopnik will get the video and post it as “it was crushed because it was a sub 25 import.” This is not the case.

The car was crushed because of VIN fraud. The first owner got it registered on the original R33 VIN as a 240SX by bribing the right person. It was then later registered as a Skyline on the same VIN. Insurance caught wind of this when a claim was filed and they reported it. The car was crushed for VIN fraud, not for being a sub 25 year import.

Sorry that a unique car had to meet its demise through fraud.

The R33 is one of those cars that ages very well for its era, having softer lines than the hard-edged R32 which screams 1980s.

Regardless, a crushed Skyline is a good Skyline.

It’s funny, I’ve never stolen anything, never committed fraud, I barely speed. I guess I’m missing out on all the fun in the world.

And the worst thing is that this fraud wasn’t necessary, because the R33 is legal. Motorex was able to show proof that it meets US standards.

Any jail time for the insurance fraudster?

Non-GTR skylines are so repulsive to me. But I like the Nissan Skylines, so I’m not sure whether to be upset or okay with it getting crushed.

Logically, the crushing is stupid.

Emotionally, I might be okay with this.

Not without thousands of dollars of work ($20k+). And no jail time.

This is why it’s best to just be patient and personally import one once it’s 25 years old. Then there is 0 chance of it being sized or crushed, unless it was bought with drug money or something.

It is sub-25 year import because there are no 25 year old R33s yet. All of them are under 25 right now. It could have been a motorex car, but if it were, what was the VIN fraud for then? The owner swapped out the VIN here to make this probably non-Motorex car easier to make legal for owning/operating. That’s a known trick less scrupulous importers try to pull on cars that can’t be legal here and, because of that, it’s also the fastest way for you to get your car seized and crushed for free courtesy of the US government.

I know it’s a sub 25 year import. That was not why it was crushed.

Knowing that their R33 Skyline was just obliterated in a crusher should be automotive hell for them, period, and should have them blacklisted from buying anything other than a minivan. Period.

Well, there was a VIN fraud because it was under 25 years old no? There wouldn’t have to fraud if it had been over, so it can be argued, that this is crushed because it’s less than 25 yo ;)

“Not exactly...” what? If the owner did go through an RI and bring the car into FMVSS compliance, then the VIN scrub is superfluous. You only do something like that to hide non compliance, or hide something stolen.

Sorry, not exactly banned due to 25 year import rule. Sorry, I should have said that. It still needs to be modified, but I had to re-read what you posted to understand what you were saying. My mistake.

Motorex was able to show proof that it meets US standards.

Mortorex hired a 3rd party to develop a set of modifications to (allegedly) bring the R33 into compliance with US standards. That development work remains proprietary company property of that 3rd party, so anyone wanting to federalize an R33 (or R32 or R34) needs to repeat all that development and testing work, and then get their solution approved by the DOT.
